Class 40

Since the launch of Class 40,  the circuit has gone from strength to strength as increasing numbers of short handed sailors, inspired by the likes of the Vendee Globe select this more affordable option to get closer to the extreme action which tempts them.

The success of this class can also be attributed to the breadth and depth of the Class calendar with rules that promotes fast, exciting racing. This winning combination has helped to attract some of the biggest names on the solo event circuit.

There are a number of different brands of Class 40 yachts that all conform to the same “box rule” and all perform slightly differently depending on the weather situation.  Ultimately it is partly the budget of a campaign and partly the availability of different types of boats that determines the yacht that is campaigned and as a result the yacht that I will be racing in the Global Ocean Race has yet to be finalised.

There are now no less than one-hundred-and-three Class 40 boats around the world, across twenty-two different countries and the Class 40 Association can boast a total membership of over one-hundred.
